BookDepository.cheap: My first production Elixir/Phoenix app

I am super excited to announce my first production Elixir/Phoenix app: BookDepository.cheap!

For all those bibliophiles, you might know that Book Depository is a pretty good site to grab books. However, the often advertised “Free shipping worldwide” is … iffy. This app is built to find the cheapest prices across Singapore, UK and US.

This is done with 4 amazon instances in different geographical locations running Elixir in distributed mode.

Here’s an example where getting in the UK is USD 24 more than Australia:

Here’s a short video that walks through the entire process:

Give it a try and tell me what you think!

If anyone else is looking for cheap books, check out Big Words. I used to use it during college.

They search multiple websites, have options for international copies, total cost with shipping, promotions, take into account membership with Amazon etc. Just make sure you uncheck the ‘rental’ button.

One time I found an instructors manual on there. :grinning:

Woot! What I found with these book comparison sites are that they do not compare based on country. In Book Depository’s case, the prices vary across countries, and there seems to be no pattern to it.

Being pissed at potentially wasting money, I got even.
