I’d also be curious to know of those that selected “Until my current PC breaks” how often that happens. I just upgraded two years ago to 12th gen Intel and was on 3rd gen up until that point. That’s a gap of ~10 years, so not bad.

I closed the lid on my phone and my j key was already hanging by a thread then snapped off shortly after. The cost to repair was only slightly less than getting a new machine.

I’ve seen people with these kind of problems already. The solution is to always carry a external keyboard with you

This was on those 2016 models where the keys had no travel. It happened on my work computer at the time as well. Has never happened on any other model! (er, that might be a lie, but it’s def never snapped right off before). I guess I should be carrying around a keyboard and a monitor, just in case

One of my university teachers had an older model, I think. He had more than 5 keys missing. He would literally carry a full fledged desktop keyboard (that was twice the size of that mac) and just place on top of the notebook when working .
Generally speaking, especially if you are in US/Canada, you can easily source a replacement and replace it yourself, there are a lot of options out there and the price will be good too. As for labor it is annoying as you will have to literally take out metal rivets, however it is a job that even a beginner can do.

I honestly never looked to into in terms of the keyboard since at that point things were just messed. But even when it popped off and nothing had snapped yet, it still wouldn’t go on right and felt terrible to press (as in, more terrible than it already did). Just hearing a story about someone with five broken keys makes my skins crawl, lol.
