This is always a fantastic point. Erlang is pure functional (if pretending that the proc-dict is an algebraic effect) per-actor, the messages are what introduces impurity in the form of how it is in the real-world too. 
This makes it easy to reason about any single specific actor, so you only have to watch the messages.
