After a bit of fiddling with the syntax, the following seems to work (thanks @codeanpeace , your suggestion was pretty close).

Ahh nice! Since you
import AppWeb.ChartView
, it makes sense that you can just use
<%= show(assigns) %>
.

Yup, that’s the primary issue. A secondary issue would be to place logic in the appropriate callbacks to optimize for efficient code execution.

I’m just trying to formulate a rule of a thumb for such scenarios.

The way I currently think about it is that the
render
callback is invoked the most frequently so anything that doesn’t need to be in
render
should be moved out of
render
. So something that would be just fine in
mount
and
render
should be in
mount
as it’s invoked less often. For example, if
assigns.user
doesn’t change after
mount
, it would make sense to move the
assign_new
logic from
render
to
mount
. If it does change due to
push_patch
, then
handle_params
would be a good spot for it.

Well I’m relieved to read that.

There are quite a few projects out there, I’d say, that still depend on react client side and the good old fashioned request response cycle.

Guess you can imagine the myriad lines of code in the view templates still being executed today.

Now the the sigil requirements being asked by phoenix 1.7+.

Not that our developers are so behind the times, just that getting the client side interface took over the project for a few years, with minimal phoenix code updates needed - mainly GenServer code to get concurrent access to client statuses assured.

Then coming back here, it’s all moved on with the darling new code, while the bread and butter still has to execute.

Just a view from those who read the books, all of them, elixir and erlang too, and feel that the phoenix creators took their eye off the ball somewhat during the the phoenix 1.4 book, while they headed off into the heady LiveView territory.
