Generally people contribute to things they think will benefit themselves. Some ways this might happen:

They want to use your product to help further some personal goal of theirs

They think contributing to your project will help build skills they want to reach their own personal goals

They are paid money

For 1 and 2 it is hard because you really have to convince strangers you have something to offer they can’t find easier/better elsewhere. It is easier to do this once you’re established and people hop aboard the hype train.

In my opinion, 3 is your best bet. I don’t see anything on your Github page about money so making that more obvious might help.

I am guessing when things work this wouldn’t be a problem. When I finally was able to run it locally(mostly using docker iirc) there was a pain navigating the internals of the project. I’m not sure if it was the amount of moving pieces or the lack of docs at the time.

I was waiting a full release to try running an instance and try learning the internals of the project to try to contribute again.

Thanks for the ongoing discussion, I’m thrilled by the words of encouragement and vitality of the elixir community
We’ve decided to tackle some of the challenges exposed in this thread through a series of “expeditions” aimed at improving different parts of the Bonfire framework and pave the way to the awaited 1.0 by co-designing the missing pieces with communities and developers.

The first expedition, named Surveying will address documentation, onboarding and developer experience - we’ve published a blog post to explain it more in details: https://bonfirenetworks.org/posts/surveying_expedition/

But in a nutshell:

We’re looking for 5 elixir developers to begin with

Each developer will have a 1-hour pairing session with the Bonfire team

During the session, the participant will go through the setup of the bonfire developer environment and the creation of a Hello World extension.

Developers will vocalize their thoughts, doubts, and suggestions throughout the process

The Bonfire team will provide support and help overcome any obstacles when necessary

The Bonfire team will incorporate feedback into the codebase and documentation and refine the onboarding experience for the next session

Participants can request compensation of €50 for their time

What do you think? Of course it would be great to have some of you joining the expedition - feel free to DM me or send a mail at team@bonfire.cafe
