I got so severely humbled by @billylanchantin that I just copied his code with very slight changes like adding types and specs and doctests, and extracting functions for better understanding of what does what, plus have common AOC helpers in a separate module.

In my defense for stealing his code, I did stare at the code for 40 minutes and played with it in
iex
until I understood exactly how it’s working. And then I was finally like “gods, I would absolutely do it this way if I knew about this Elixir API!”.

But yeah, I had no idea about
Enum.zip_with
and
Enum.zip_reduce
. Lesson learned – check Elixir’s CHANGELOGs!

If you allow me: This will attempt
String.to_integer
on a string with several integers inside i.e.
String.to_integer("1 2 3 4")
. Copy-paste mistake?

Whoops, yep! I have a
Aoc2024.Util
file that has
file_to_lists_of_ints
broken across several functions and this was exactly a bad copy/paste. Here’s is the correct equivalent:

lines = file |> File.read!() |> String.trim() |> String.split("\n")
Enum.map(lines, fn line -> line |> String.split() |> Enum.map(&String.to_integer/1) end)

And I’m flattered by the theft! For full transparency, I spend a lot of time poring over the
Enum
and
Stream
module docs when I do these challenges. I for sure don’t have all these functions memorized. I also tend to write more “obvious” solutions first, then squish them down over several passes before I post.

I do that quite a lot but in this case I somehow initially figured that would be “cheating”. But thinking of it again, I don’t intend borrowing anybody’s code again – you’ll be the only exception, unless I also learn something new and interesting from others in the other threads. But even then I’ll leave my own solution because I’d still think I’d cheat by copying others. In your case I did it because I was ashamed to not know about those two functions I quoted above.

So yeah, I’ll do several passes on AOC challenges from here on as well.
