I am really enjoying this book the information on it is golden, it is one of the best elixir resources I have read outside like elixir in action.
I only have one slight complain, is it me or is the font a bit off when it comes to size? I have various leanpub books, but for some reason the size or maybe the layout of the font for this book just throws me off a little bit

Leanpub allows you to customize the theme. Given the amount of code in the book and the book’s length, I opted for a smaller font, so that code listings and IEx snippets fit better on the page. Do you find it uncomfortable for the eyes? Let me know and I can adjust in the next release (on Leanpub and PragProg).
Edit: forgot to mention that I’m in the process of porting Northwind Elixir Traders to Asciidoctor, so that I can be more flexible with formatting of the generated PDF and ePub files (that will eventually end up on both Leanpub and PragProg).

This may be my bias. But i find the fonts too small, which forced me to read the book through my monitor and zoomed in. This is not a huge problem, as it was remedied, but it threw me off from getting into the zone when reading the book, mainly because on one page I might be zoomed in and then i attempt to flick back or forward and have to reset my zoom and page angle etc
I have two leanpub and a pragprog book and I can read them very comfortably on both my laptop screen and monitor without the need for zooming in or switching it to a bigger screen. I hope this helps, I dont mind the code snippets size, I think a better highlight system for the commands like mix tasks being used should also be considered
other than that like i said above, the book is golden and i can tell you put alot of thought and effort into writing it. Just the font size threw me off by breaking my flow maybe others in the thread dont feel the same way

I just bought the book this evening through pragprog. I’d had my eye on it for a while since I saw it pop up there a while back, and with some free time figured I’d check it out – I’ve been writing elixir for more than 10 years now, but ecto is something I’ve never really dived all that deep into. And I’m old enough to remember some of the original Northwind db examples, so the nostalgia hit there is appreciated.
I’ve just finished chapter 1, and so far am enjoying the book quite well. I really appreciate the ethos you profess in the preface – not wanting to write a book where everything just works on the first try. I wish more authors / technical content creator folks would embrace that, and show some of the failures/pain points that inevitably crop up when learning something new.
My only gripe so far is that it seems like there’s something strange going on in the epub formatted version of the book. In the foliate and bookworm readers, it will just… hang… after a few pages. So far the thorium reader software is working, but can sometimes take a surprisingly long time to move from one page to the next. I know next-to-nothing about epubs so I don’t have any ideas as to what the issue might be, but figured I’d mention it, since you said you’re in the process of porting to asciidoctor (unless that’s already complete?)

Hello @jordan0day, thank you for buying the book – and for appreciating the ethos!
I have reported this to Leanpub, where the PDF and ePub files originate; their ePub export is sub-par, which is weird for a website that deals with books as its main focus… It could also be that the file is rather large (besides the cover image) – on my Android and ReadEra it takes a few seconds to load, but pages load instantly when leafing through it.
I just tried this though: I converted the original ePub file with Calibre to ePub again and I don’t know what it did besides making the cover lower-resolution, but the exported file is faster to load and leaf through.
The asciidoctor port will happen within 2025, but I’m currently busy with Phoenix Product Codex and a yet-unreleased book on an API client that I need urgently for a project.
I’ve had two readers report one minor typo each, so I’ll be releasing a new version and errata within August.
