Yeah, I used to do a lot more rebasing during development exactly as described. After interactive staging and --patch was made available to all the index/worktree-touching commands, I kinda slowly organically shifted to this. Still use rebasing for branch/repo admin but barely ever for dev.
In practice I only really have a few recent “hot” commits in the recent history for any branch, you’ll notice most of my aliases are based around peeking into/massaging hunks on the top of the stack. This sorta hunk-juggling lets me move fast and live messily but still makes it easy to clean up as I go without a full interactive rebase, it’s just more intuitive to me.
