would a preferred salutation text box help?
one of my friends has a lot of letters after his name, which he insists on writing on everything. I’m sure he’d be as upset as picking a gender; and it only important in a career sense, to further the historic differences in pay and working conditions.
Well done on producing the site, it has a lot of functionality. Thank you even more for considering the gender edits; it seemed really strong as an issue in initial posts (did it bump the numbers much?)
I want to keep the questions in that registration form to a minimum. There are already too many for my opinion but I want all the search engine and AI agent and Fediverse stuff as clear as possible.

I think that may be worse? I had to enter my gender on a government site this week and the options were:
Which I thought covered all bases.
We have that.
My understanding is that diverse covers non-binary.
We have that.
I wait for the day a user sends me an email about that with an actual example that I understand and agree with to add this field.
Every week I have to disagree with good and less good feature requests. That is part of the game of being a maintainer. I can not cover everything. I do not want to cover everything. But I am always open for a good argument.

And you should know better than to expect that a user is going to email you about an issue on your website. Most of them can’t even be bothered to report crucial bugs

I tried to sign in. The problem is, I guess I did not enter the pin from email soon enough; I was distracted. On my defense, UI thedid not specified how long the pin would stay valid. Now I am on a limbo state because hitting “resend pin” does nothing. Yes, I received the first email, no I am not using any SPAM filter.
May I suggest you to enable password login? Every decent browser has a password manager now and your target audience should know how to generate unique high quality passwords and store them safely.

That might be a different problem. Because your registration will time out completely after some time.
But do not worry: Wait an hour and then try to register again. The system auto deletes registrations which are in limbo.
You would not believe how many non technical users have no idea how to use it or just don’t want to use the password manager. My very own daughter who I have told countless times how important the password manager is and who has the tools right at here finger tip is a perfect example for that.
Once you logged in with the PIN you can setup a passkey.

I am flat out convincing my partner not to use a password with her name and birth year in it for every site
I agree that there are dumb users; however, password login is still the only auth method that does not have an external dependency that is not under the site user and site owner’s control. I’d still urge you to give your user a way to control their own credential.
