I think I came across a bit too strong, what I wanted to say was that our job as developers is to facilitate our customers’ needs, and those who cede authority over that to $FAMOUS_FIGURE have effectively declared themselves out of the picture.
This may be fine when said $FAMOUS_FIGURE is actually in the picture, but becomes outright silly when they aren’t. By analogy it’s good to cede authority over your house’s wiring to an electrician (developer) when doing renovations, but rather suspect to second-guess the electrician you’ve hired after reading a book by some famous electrician.
Making judgment calls is such a large part of our jobs and regardless of AI, recommendations, or whatever we still have to do this part and trust ourselves to do so.
I’d say that appealing to authority ought be the biggest code smell of them all, if only it weren’t for the fact that this too will probably be misinterpreted.
