For larger units of work I lean on a personal fork of Matt Pocock’s wayfinder skill – which basically captures the end goal and then generates a bunch of work (research, prototypes, question/answer refinement) to better map out the problem and potential solution. Then you make a “spec” (which for me ends up being the parent epic GitHub issue) and then a bunch of implementation sub issues.

A loose idea has arrived — too big for one agent session, and wrapped in fog: the way from here to the **destination** isn't visible yet. Wayfinding is about finding that way, not charging at the destination. This skill charts the way as a **shared map** on the repo's issue tracker, then works its **decision tickets** — questions whose resolution is a decision, not slices of a build to execute — one at a time until the route is clear.

The destination varies per effort, and naming it is the first act of charting — it shapes every ticket. It might be a spec to hand off and iterate on, a decision to lock before planning starts, or a change made in place like a data-structure migration. The map is domain-agnostic — engineering work, course content, whatever fits the shape.

## Plan, don't do

Wayfinder is **planning** by default: each ticket resolves a decision, and the map is done when the way is clear — nothing left to decide before someone goes and does the thing. The pull to just do the work is usually the signal you've reached the edge of the map and it's time to hand off. An effort can override this in its **Notes** — carrying execution into the map itself — but absent that, produce decisions, not deliverables.

For my personal project, I am solely responsible it seems to work ok – but I will say the walls of AI copy generated don’t feel particularly fair to plop down on some other human.

For anything I really care about and want to express to another human, more and more I write myself. I’ll use the AI to clean up grammar and as a feedback scan, but I need the copy to be focused and lean and in my experience I get none of that from AI.

“Focused and lean” and above all, correct, is what I want in a story. Better to state 1 correct requirement and stop than to give a page full of direction that’s mostly right.

I can’t remember who said this, but AI scrambles the signals of human writing. It’s clear when a human has jotted down an incomplete thought vs written out a detailed analysis. But if the human used AI, both outputs look polished. So it takes a lot of effort to discern how well thought-out something is, where there’s room for pushback, etc. It’s easier to just say “meh, let a bot do whatever they said.” I fear that this is the way software will rot.
