(I used to feel the same way quite ardently, more recently tho, the futility hits me - maybe I’m just getting old, maybe I just need to get back into my daily saunas

Some might argue it’s all linked, but even if that wasn’t the reason you were laid off - the industry, whether we like it or not, has changed - hence I was curious (and I think it might help others) - if you were laid off today would you get another dev job… or do something else?
Statements like this is why I linked that video. There’s another part in there that talks about technological determinism.
As an example, microwave ovens were marketed(when they were new tech) as if we’d only ever cook with them in the future(now). Chefs/professional kitchens rejected that idea(wood-fire ovens are actually kinda trendy now).
I’m trying. I will continue to write code by hand and I will forever be thinking about how to make computers do what I want them to do even when I’m not in front of one.
I can just go by what I see, and I think a large number of people (given many of the threads and posts we’ve seen on this very forum) would agree the industry has changed. It could be temporary (like your microwave analogy) but right now I think it’s fair to say there is a general consensus that it has changed - and that’s enough for people who are finding themselves in the situation to consider their options.

Cry and then probably look at something outside tech because with all the **** that’s going on right now, I don’t think I could find a tech job I’d be happy with
I reject the premise of your question. I will never be made redundant. There is too much stuff that needs to done. Someone has to do it, and I love what I do. I’ll work for free if I have to, until something works out.
…And if that doesn’t work out, I’ll return to my previous work, which was a lot less fun than tech. Until the robots come for me there, too…
EDIT: Upon reflection, I guess I can’t reject the entire premise of the question… But I did my best!
IMO the only way people can become redundant (b/c of LLMs) is due to a lower headcount demand on per project basis. Since this directly results in more room for new projects, including ones the newly “redundant” developers launch themselves, it’s hardly an absolute or permanent condition.
Most application developers (both frontend and backend) are knowledeable in at least one domain in addition to sw engineering. Unless the domain itself is being made obsolete, that’s a considerable intangible asset when it comes both to their employability and capacity as potential entrepreneurs.
It’s great that we can prototype anything at the speed of our imagination now. But it’s getting a bit boring to build whatever we like with no real challenges left. Unless we think real hard about problems to solve that just a few have tried. Like playing a game with a cheat code to give us infinite lives, infinite coins etc. The game stops being fun.
“AI can do the coding now and I can focus on the high-level stuff” it’s not really appealing. For me, the real boring part if to write tickets, spend days in meetings discussing industry intricacies, define issues epics/milestones and all the scrum artifacts (I still like system design though). It’s like “AI can drive the car while you stay at the pitch monitoring fuel consumption, performance, tyre degradation etc”. AI might take the fun part from us. I know it might not be perfect yet but I saw in previous threads that some people are not coding or reviewing code for months…
I don’t have an immediate plan for changing career, if by any miracle machines start planning, writing code, and self-healing systems better than us. Maybe I could try creative work like art/design/writing etc but that is also being polluted with AI rubbishy. At some point, hopefully, people will miss seeing typos, bad grammar, non-overly polished language and human-made stuff back.
I’m not interested in working with tech outside of web development, and I don’t hold much hope for the future of the web, so “find another job” for me.
I’m optimistic that more software will be made by the same number of people rather than the same amount of software being made by fewer people. And as AIs currently stand, a non-technical business person cannot “drive” one like I can.
Even if AIs improve drastically, I don’t think I’ll be made redundant; I think people who think and communicate pretty well will probably continue to be needed. My fear is more that the change will burn me out. Focusing hard on doing one thing at a time is a very different job than juggling the management of many AI agents.
But if I burn out on tech, I’m not sure what I could do for a living. I’ll cross that bridge if I come to it.
