Head of Engineering for Funded Startup w/ Team of 3 Engineers

Introductory paragraph

Bounce is hiring a new head of engineering.

Bounce has an opening on the team for someone new to lead our engineering team.

We have an engineering team of 3 and use an exciting stack: Elixir , React, React Native, Typescript, & Apollo.

We’re ultimately looking for someone who can join the team long term as a partner in building Bounce into a meaningful company. This is the perfect opportunity for someone who is entrepreneurial but wants to skip the 1-2 years of the earliest days of a startup where you don’t have a salary or traction.

Bounce launched 18 months ago ranking #1 Product of the Day on Product Hunt and has since expanded to more than 100 cities. We’re backed by some of the top investors in Silicon Valley and have an outstanding team that is continuously pushing the edge on what we can achieve.

My name: Aleksander Rendtslev
My position: CTO
Company name: Bounce Inc
Website: https://usebounce.com
Country: United States
Company info and history (how you’re using Elixir etc): Elixir is the clue that ties all our systems together. All our backend services are written in Elixir with Phoenix and Absinthe as the (backend) frontends of our core business layers.

About the job

Job title: Head of Engineering
Job description:

What we will be building together:
Bounce’s vision is to build a layer of infrastructure over urban areas that enable seamless pickup and dropoff of “things.” Ultimately, “cloud computing for the physical world.” The first piece of this has been getting storage locations all over dense urban areas and allowing people to store things there - it’s been very popular with travelers leaving luggage and commuters stashing a gym bag, work bag, etc. This is our core product and what will drive most of our revenue in the short term. Additionally, we’ll be building the next layer up of the platform - think delivery, further utilization of spaces, etc. There’s a ton more to dive into on what all this means.

You’ll be joining as Head of Engineering and be responsible for orhcestrating our efforts across the entire stack. You’re expected to be willing (and wanting) to jump in and deliver well architected solutions to challenging problems in the areas where your experience shines. And direct efforts in the areas where it should be left to the skills of the team. The backend, admin tools and our infrastructure is the main area where you’ll be expected to take code ownership initially, so there’ll be plenty of opportunities to build on and build out the Elixir setup of your dreams.

The ideal candidate:
The perfect candidate is an outstanding engineer who will set a high quality bar for everyone else in the codebase while still writing code themselves. I will also count on you to lead our future engineering hiring as well as being a thought partner on business strategy. You should have experience leading other engineers, but not so much management that you no longer write your own code.

Salary range :$100k – $150k

Position on remote work:

The team is currently fully remote, but we plan to build out offices in San Francisco and Lisbon. However, whoever ends up joining the team will be able to shape how we decide to balance this. Most of the engineering team is in Europe based right now, so for the short term, we’ll be prioritizing people who’ll be flexible in that timezone.

Qualifications or experience required:
What the successful job applicant will be working on:

About the interview process
You’ll be invited to a series of calls with multiple members of the team to evaluate whether theres a mutual fit from both a experience and cultural perspective. It matters a lot to us that this is as right for you as it is for us.
