I wonder how Whatsapp was/is deployed? Is it deployed on some cloud hosting or a network of physical (dedicated) servers? How its deployment changed once it was sold to Facebook?

Physical servers, with some special OS tuning. And FB runs all their own servers, much of their infrastructure is custom-built…
