Why is the Ecto library named Ecto?

Hey all, I’ve been using Ecto for a while, and really enjoying it. Today it occurred to me that I have no idea why it was named Ecto – has it ever been documented why it was named this way by its author ?

Because it “wraps” the database. José said this in an interview though I can’t remember which. I think it was on the seemingly now defunct ElixirTalk. I just remember he lamented that he was pleased with the name but then everyone thought it had to do with Ghostbusters

Also, welcome to the form!

I mean, the logo definitely looks like some ectoplasm - just sayin’

I just looked at it for the first time in a bit… haha, yes, yes it does.

Ahhhh I see, it’s “ecto” as in “the outer layer of something”, as in “ectoderm”. That makes a lot of sense.

Also welcome to the forum!

Aww thanks sodapopcan, that’s kind of you. Your kindness is one of the things that makes me and others want to gravitate towards

I heard that it was a project sponsored by a company who used things from Ghostbusters for their internal project names. Considering the comment made by Jose, I may be putting the cart before the horse on this one.

I had not heard this! I’m relistening to some episodes to see if I can find my source.
