My reason for using a Planck is not that it’s the perfect layout. From an ergonomic standpoint, I think the Minidox is slightly better. But I ultimately found the Planck to be the best board for me overall, because:

Split keyboards are fiddly. I take my keyboard everywhere, and I don’t work from home. Every time you set up a split, there is this bit of tweaking to get it right. A single-slab board isn’t like that, you just drop it on the desk and start typing.

Split keyboards that communicate over serial (like the Minidox) are less forgiving when you use complex mod/tap behaviors. If the difference between a modifier and an alpha is just a few milliseconds, then the fractional lag introduced by serial becomes significant. At the end of the day, I can type with slightly less precision on the Planck and still get the expected behavior. The Minidox requires me to be just a bit more deliberate.

The Planck is available hotswap and the Minidox isn’t.

Adding the wide mod seems like a small change, but it completely changes the feel of the board. Having the pinkies at the edge of the board was something I was already used to from Minidox, so it felt natural to me. I don’t have a big frame or wide shoulders, but I still notice a big ergonomic improvement when separating the hands that little bit more.

As a split user I totalla agree…

Still, I will always prefer this fiddliness over a planck or similarily cramped boards for a fixed workstation.

Since I am using a split, my wrist pain has significantly became less, as now I do not need to weirdly turn my wrists anymore to be able to get into a position that is usable for writing.

And indeed, I am still searching for a keyboard that I could use for travels, that doesn’t cost much and is designed to be used singlehanded…

And I am aware that this ultimatively means, that I will have to design a layout for myself based on my moonlanders left half, and leave the right one at home when traveling…

I spent a year totally geeking out on keyboards. Went through the planck and the corne, and finally decided to design and fab my own. Learned a lot and I kinda like where I landed.

Couldn’t agree more, and exactly why I designed my own. I took my split corne and put them exactly in the position I liked, and then measured the halves’ positions, and designed my keyboard to be a 1-piece in the same position.

Your keyboard looks awesome, and appears to follow the shape I mentioned earlier (almost like a heart shape). Now it’s made and you’ve been using it for a while, do you think it might have been worth adding a few more keys, perhaps above the
9
and
8
and one to the left of each them? Or maybe even a single one where it feels most natural?

How did you find what the perfect fitting is for you? Use paper? Or maybe keys cut out of paper with a bit of sticky tape on the back so you could find the perfect position? I think I’d like to try making one one day! Are there any sites dedicated to this specific topic? (If not, why not create one!?)

This could also be an amazing business opportunity: custom keyboards made to fit your hands! You send out a mould or print kit, people could take moulds and then send them back, and then you make a perfect-fit keyboard for them!

I wonder if anyone is already doing it?
