Most of those criteria are great for people without families or responsibilities who have free time to spend after work. Actually, even then, I don’t know if I want to work with people with such narrow interests and hobbies outside of work.

You need only look around the forum to see there are plenty of people with families, responsibilities and interests other than coding who have a lot of what I mentioned under their belts

But yeah, if you were an employer and you were looking for something else, you totally get to decide what that criteria is. For me personally I’d want to work with people who share the same passion - and perhaps even more importantly in some areas other than coding, which is something you often get an idea about through things like blog posts or forum posts (for me that is wanting to make the world a better place).

I think a portfolio is always a good idea if you you want to be employed, but it doesn’t always have to be via the obvious - hence I agree with what @mindok said - that activity and presence doesn’t always have to be via repos/OS libs:

And while @dimitarvp mentions that he hadn’t built a track record of GitHub repos, he had built a track record of contributions to the community, e.g. through this forum. As have you, although not quite as long as Dimi’s yet! This also shows the care, initiative, communication ability and often technical skill that you can point to in a hiring process.

I have mentioned it a few times now but not long after I got into programming a number of prominent Ruby/Rails companies offered me work based purely on my blog posts and activity on public spaces. Even now while having been in Elixir for all these years I still get job offers from Ruby outfits (most of my blog posts were about Ruby - and those getting in touch are usually people I have met or spoken to along that journey. i.e not random recruiters, of which I actually get next to no contact - thank goodness!)

The funny thing is I never blogged with the intention of wanting job offers (I am far too happy doing my own thing) but make a point of mentioning it because there’s nothing special about me or what I can do in a technical sense (especially back then) yet I still got offers and I firmly believe it was because of those blog posts because I literally didn’t do anything else hence why I feel it could help others.

Generally people hire people - if what you post and how you come across on public platforms like this resonates with others, then imo there’s a good chance you’ll get noticed

“Senior” can mean multiple things:

Being experienced in Elixir

Being autonomous, able to work independently

Having good understanding of how to build systems, e.g. full life cycle experience, design experience

Having domain understanding, either at a technical level e.g. building web applications, or a business domain e.g. e-commerce or banking

A lot of this is not Elixir specific at all. If someone is experienced, then the language doesn’t matter. You can check their level of understanding of e.g. functional programming or OTP, but that’s all reasonably easy to learn. My rule of thumb is that an experienced Ruby on Rails developer can be productive with Elixir within a month, particularly if they have someone to help them to design the system right and help them with new concepts.

A true senior is focused on the big picture and getting the requirements right so they can build the right solution.

A friend interviewed with a startup, and they gave him a “take home” test with some example code for a “REST” API and asked him to add some features to it. He made the changes, then identified some problems with the API. It didn’t follow REST principles at all, it was basically just random JSON over HTTP, with ad-hoc error handling. He recommended GraphQL, as it has a well-defined fundamental structure and data schemas. Using GraphQL also makes the organization work better, as front-end and mobile developers don’t have to rely on back-end developers to create APIs for them. They can just make requests for what they need from the back end, without having to have multiple meetings. Their “senior engineers” didn’t understand what he was talking about, and failed him because he “didn’t have enough experience with Phoenix”. The company was out of business within six months.

Another friend was interviewing for an engineering manager position. The initial rounds of interviews with company management and business stakeholders went fine. They then brought in a “senior engineer” to test his technical ability. The interviewer asked a question about how to calculate if two squares are overlapping. He asked about the application, e.g. graphics programming vs geographic information systems. “No application, we just want to see how you think”. He was like “the way I think is that I try to focus on solving real problems that are important to the business.” They failed him for “not taking the programming task seriously enough".

Autonomy is also very important, see The Four Stages of Santa Claus for software developers

This is subjective, using graphql for some cases can be counterproductive, but their response of course was bad.

I had a similar situation, they gave me a task to make a state machine following their requirements, the only limitation was to not use any third-party libraries. Without thinking much I knew I could use ‘gen_fsm’ witch is part of OTP. After handing the task, they said that I used a library instead of making my own state machine, and the implementation is too complex, even though it took me 30 minutes to complete it, so they declined me. The fun thing is if I were using genserver witch is obviously another OTP library but has an elixir wrapper, they would not complain.
