To me high-quality models like Claude Opus have been liberating. They liberated me from the tyranny of caring about “must private functions always be at the end of the file?” or “does
require
go before
alias
or vice versa?” and freed my mental bandwidth to ask questions like “but how and why is our interest calculation pipeline structured this way?” and “we need to add more product types soon, so let’s rearchitect the code to allow extension and configurability and pluggability”.

I see this argument a lot and I don’t think I’m buying it to be honest. Please don’t take this personally, even though I’m replying to you, I’m not talking specifically about you.

The reason why I’m skeptical is that this argument is based entirely on self-reports and humans have very limited introspection. We are masters of reframing and rationalization and have complex psychological mechanisms working day and night to preserve our self-image.

So what is it we’re trying to rationalize when we claim that LLMs free our brain cycles to think more about important stuff? I think it’s the usual suspect - avoiding doing the hard thing. Deep focused work is hard and unpleasant and LLMs can be easily used to shortcut it. It’s a job, after all, it’s natural to want to work a little bit less hard. To cope with that, we tell ourselves that the work that we off-load to LLMs wasn’t worth doing anyway and we now focus more on real architecture. This usually takes a form of chatting with Claude about some galaxy brain concepts or drawing boxes in Figma or whatnot.

Of course, there is no way for me to know for sure what’s going on in other people’s heads. But that is aligned with my personal experience. I can’t think of a single great engineer who I personally worked with who jumped on the Claude train and is killing it. They’re all skeptical to some degree. I also haven’t met a single Claude-powered engineer since November 2025 who would impress and inspire me! Even though that used to happen a lot. There is, however, no shortage of people who fall deeper and deeper into the death spiral of LLM-induced building spree. They build and build and build completely unconstrained by anything with every their idea being validated and encouraged by AI. Every day, as they produce thousands lines of code, they step by step detach from reality.

That is pretty scary and FWIW I think that’s to be expected. AI is a novel technology and we have to figure out how to use it responsibly.

IMO, this is only partially true. The challenges we’re facing on a daily basis are layered and span over several (many) abstraction levels. When a human brain is dealing with too many or too distant abstraction layers simultaneously and in real time, it’s literally brain-churning, and this is not just me talking. You can find this in many project management books (used to be a project manager myself at some point in my career). The idea of not having both the project manager and the software architect role embodied within the same person (even if that person is comparatively the best choice for both positions) essentially comes from this limitation of the human mind. You can code in the zone or you can do the project planning/manage people/make deals and project tradeoffs in the zone, but you just can’t flip-flop and stay in the zone. Or you can burn trying.

That, and the fact that each one of us is leaning toward a slightly different goal. For instance, I love creating value (for the user). I also find it thrilling and extremely fulfilling addressing architectural and framework challenges (and am very good at it), but I would lie if I said my heart was not where the perceived value is.

The reason why I (suddenly) fell in love with using Claude has very little to do with laziness (technical problem solving has been my specialty and I’ve always enjoyed it - after all I learned programming at the age of 16 back in Yugoslavia in the 80’s where there were 0 manuals (literally none), let alone the internet, and by literally disassembling the video games which were all originally written in assembly). It’s about the fact that now with Claude I can finally dedicate much more time to what I actually love the most - creating new value.

Since performant coding agents, I only work the same amount or more, not less, and have more context to keep in mind, not less. Review is also more taxing than creation. Sure, I now have leverage and the gap between my vision and execution has reduced. But overall I do not think there will be any “liberation” here.

We are in a gray zone where the price of our output has not yet collapsed, yet we are able to produce more. This won’t stand the test of time. I would not like being in employment in this new reality at all. Salaried developers just will need to use a lot more brainpower for the same wage, or stop caring to cope with the increased demand.

Solo, I sell products, so I have maybe a few years of leeway, but the AI providers are coming for that too, and they employ metric tons of 500k+/year developers to be sure that software is assimilated.

… Deep focused work is hard and unpleasant and LLMs can be easily used to shortcut it. It’s a job, after all, it’s natural to want to work a little bit less hard.

Extending our capabilities and making us more effective is what most tools are all about. You can choose to convert that into doing less work, or you can work just as hard and get more done? To me that is not a question of the value or usefulness of a tool, but rather a question of priorities. What is normally the case when getting more effective tools is that many will chose the do more option to earn more, and at some level you are likely in competition with them.

Personally I think the AI coding tools are already very usable, but also far from perfect. Within two-three years though I expect that to be shifted much more towards the perfect end. Before that happens I want to position myself to know the tools, their pro and cons, the possibilities and changes they bring, and just how I would like to use them. If we decide in a few years time that this AI coding was a fad and we should all return to just hand coding then the joke is absolutely on me!

To cope with that, we tell ourselves that the work that we off-load to LLMs wasn’t worth doing anyway and we now focus more on real architecture. This usually takes a form of chatting with Claude about some galaxy brain concepts or drawing boxes in Figma or whatnot.

That is not at all what I tell myself or how I work with Claude. In my world all the work that needs to be done must be done, and getting paid literally makes it worth doing. That usually includes a lot that is routine work. Handing that off to an AI coder that can do that much faster is a given for me, and I see no reason why I should do the typing instead. Then there is the more architectural side where I hope to see AI make most of that routine too at some point.

One way Claude has improved my workflow is much faster prototyping and experimentation. For example, when there are many possible technology choices available which may or may not work, I would earlier have to make an informed early choice and hope for the best going forward. These days I can get Claude to run ahead prototyping each one and then chose the optimal way forward based on that. For what I do that has proven very useful and valuable indeed. The value proposition of certain products are much improved from finding rather unexpected solutions I would never have found otherwise.

Years ago I came across a furniture maker who made every piece the proper old way using only hand tools and elbow grease. The joins were pieces of art, the materials carefully selected, and the tools he used were literally honed to perfection. A master craftsman to be sure and quality work all around. His products though was for the very few who could afford them, and the volume of output was less than a master craftsman in the 1800s.

He had a certain superiority complex and quite low and vocal thoughts about mass produced furniture. By his chosen metrics he had good points as his furniture had clearly better technical quality. The majority of buyers and manufacturers though focused more on functional furniture at competitive affordable prices. What he did not consider, was the equally high skilled work needed to design attractive furniture for mass manufacture with computerized machines and setups, inexpensive storage and shipping, easy assembly and low prices. That is an art too, but one he simply did not see or acknowledge.

Which parts of what I said you disagree with in particular? I gave concrete examples to avoid us digging ourselves deeper into big clumps of anecdotal evidence. Do you prefer discussing where in a file do private functions belong or would you rather go fix a Heisenbug that made you have to live-correct customer’s financial accounts because the code you are responsible for was badly designed and that allowed the bug to manifest itself?

Ignoring concrete discussion points and more or less saying “people who self-report success with LLM usage lack introspection” is not giving me anything to work with except raise an eyebrow.

Discussing the particular examples – or you adding your own and we discuss those instead – can help us arrive at interesting insights.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’ve read other testimonies online that back my personal feeling.

The current phase where we are all early adopters cannot last / be sustainable forever.

I’m not so sure that we’ll end up being replaced so soon, or at the very least, that such a thing would be painless for the customers. It’s easy to forget that the code is only a part of the product; our understanding of it is another, and that is not as easily replaced by an LLM.
