This might be a bit disturbing for some but it’s happening - computers running on living human neurons. They’ve made them smart enough to play Pong and Doom (took about a week for it to learn to move and shoot).

Could the BEAM’s tiny processes be a good fit?

Must admit I found the way they taught them a bit disturbing, feels almost like torture : /
