I did this - remapped to control - long enough to see if it would change my life. It did, so I bought an Ergodox EZ, and haven’t looked back since.

Remapped with Karabiner.

Tapping Caps Lock is a single Cmd+Tab (alternate between two latest apps)

Holding Caps Lock + tapping a letter opens/focuses a given app (e.g. C for code, B for the browser, “I” for the terminal, M for mail, and so on)

Holding Caps Lock + tapping a number changes the workspace (up to 5)

You missed one option: “There is no Caps Lock on my keyboard”.

I use UHK keyboards and neither v2 nor v1 has it.

tl;dr: I remap Caps lock to Shift

I never used Caps lock ever. My desktop keyboard is a Typematrix 2030 since ~2012, where the left Shift key takes the place of Shift and Caps lock compared to a classic keyboard. So to avoid mistypes due to my muscle memory on other keyboards (e.g. on my laptop), I remapped Caps lock to shift.

But as a non Mac user, the best move I did is to switch left Control and left Alt to replicate the Mac Command key experience. It’s just a game changer.

More over, I use a custom Colemak layout. It just change some Alt Gr inputs for french characters without dead keys and for useful characters for devs.

Not to get too off topic, but I’m one of those people who uses readline system-wide for everywhere that isn’t Vim normal mode. That is to say, ctrl-h isn’t too shabby of a delete alternative I know it’s a chord for a common action, but I do find find myself often pressing capslock, realizing I don’t actually want to use control, but needing to pause for a second to prevent escape from being sent, so I have limited the number of tap/hold keys I have to one.

Yup, tons of remapping – on both the macOS side via Karabiner and Hammerspoon as well as the firmware side via ZMK…

For modifiers on the left side:

• caps lock => esc when pressed alone, ctrl when held as a modifier
  • great for vim and tmux/terminal
• tab => tab when pressed alone, hyper/super key i.e. shift + ctrl + opt + cmd as a modifier
  • or some other subset combination of modifier keys
• shift => delete when pressed alone, shift as a modifier
  • delete/backspace is used often, but its key is basically in keyboard Siberia

That one is a stretch goal of mine, I only have to put the money aside in a way that my wife doesn’t miss it, and then eventually find the glove “on the street”…

Until then my frankenlander has to suffice…

I realised why I hadn’t notice it before, out of 5 Apple keyboards I have here only the most recent one has a globe icon! The rest of them just have ‘fn’. I have mine set for bringing up the emoji picker so use it quite a lot

I wish macOS had better options built in to the OS. I still wouldn’t mind CL so long as it is only activated on long press (I really hate pressing it by accident!)

That’d actually be quite useful - I believe that’s what you need to paste in plain text, correct? I usually set up a KB shortcut for it. Do you use it for anything else?
