Generative AI shortly to become mundane. It is already a captured commodity market.
Domain specialisation will be the only way to enter/survive the market (although we all do prefer an exit of course)
Many grey areas and potential conflicts between AppStore governance & how business/consumers want to use Agents, local LLM &c. (privacy, rights, abuse, harms)
For Nx, I’m not qualified to speak. More generally there are interesting theoretical developments in moving away from MatMul methods that might bypass some of BEAMs weaknesses in future.
My $.02 - we will see increased market interest for:
I can be your anecdotal data point. I don’t mind all these features on my phone where all I’m doing is playing games and watching YouTube, but having this on my computer where my source code, private docs, etc live is frightening. I’m definitely looking into alternatives for desktop computing, and will not be updating my current Mac
Yeah, and then you install something like an authenticator app on your phone for 2FA auth.
I’m a happy Xubuntu user. My primary apps are terminal and browser, and I love Xubuntu because it changes slowly.
But recently my pace of desktop tweaking has increased a lot, due to the emergence of ChatGPT. OpenAI is great for bash scripts, neovim plugins, linux settings, & command-line tweaks. It’s become much easier to manipulate the Linux desktop.
So I think OpenAI has both a push and pull dynamic for desktop computing. Push because privacy-sensitive developers have increased motivation to move away from Apple and MS. Pull because the LLM assistants make it easier to adopt the Linux desktop.
I might just self host my own authenticator. There are a couple large open source authentication communities.
I’ll have to look into this thanks for the tip. I’m open to trying something off the beaten path os wise as long as it can install my dev environment
Haha, I never update my Macs to get Apple’s latest junk OS.
