Since the keyboard thread has been going strong for a while I wanted to start a similar thread for desk chair recommendations. I’m in the market and looking but the variety (and cost) is all over the place.

Thanks for the heads up. I move and redo shawnonthenet so often it’s only up about 20% of the time  I should probably stop advertising the url

I’m even more curious now :044:

PS I just went to https://shawnonthe.net/ in case there was anything on there but it’s giving me a 502 as a bad gateway..

I’ve made such a video as part of a planned youtube video about routines. I don’t think it will be seeing the light of day  I look a lot cooler in my head for sure

Ah I see. It’s such a pain putting it in place and then away again so I made sure I was getting my money’s worth, haha! But seriously, walking for 5 hours is not a problem for me - it’s just the unnatural movement that bothers me, and I worry it might be doing more harm than food - at least compared to something like a bike.

I think we need a demonstration video Shawn

Not 5 hours! If I’m working at my desk tops is probably 2 hours of walking though average probably closer to 1-1.5 and the rest I’m just standing on it while its not moving. I rarely sit.

I tend to “dance walk” for lack of a better term(imagine the ok go video with a single treadmill) so I occasionally get sore in the knees if I’m twisting too much but not in the hips.

Yeah it’s kinda crazy really - you can get a really good motorised one for that price.

Do you find your treadmill makes your hips hurt? How long do you use yours for? I was going on mine for about 5 hours a day. Maybe I am just used to walking up mountains

I have a peloton and I got a plastic “desktop” insert for the handle bars that can hold my laptop. The screen is at an awkward angle so I can’t do it for long but its certainly usable while riding though I’m not exactly racing. I imagine if you could fit it under a desk so the keyboard was in a good spot and the monitors higher it’d be pretty nice!

1100 euro for an unpowered treadmill seems excessive unless you’re going for the craft treadmill market(is that a thing?). The problem I’ve had trying unpowered treadmills is either they have too much friction causing them to be a lot more work/tiring or they don’t have enough and then you struggle to balance. I got my first powered one off amazon for like $150aud so less than 1/10th and even that was quiet enough, though I wear headphones. My current one is a bit more expensive but it folds in half for storage.

I expect they’ll get a few sales but I’d be surprised at even a 1% conversion from the wait list.

When not walking(rare) I use an Aeron for work and at my electronics lab desk I just use a simple wooden chair I’ve borrowed from my dining table(accidentally bought a 6 seat dining table and live alone I have some to spare).

I’m also known to sit in my recliner and work sometimes too.

Interesting info about the electric bike, just cant picture typing while on one. Thanks for the standing desk link, I was looking for one

I had the same set up - I bought a cheap treadmill off Amazon:

As far as treadmills go it is fairly light and fairly manoeuvrable - but it’s still a pain to put in place then pack away, so I used it for about a month and now it is just stored away. I think I might have put up with it but I find walking on treadmills for long periods make my hips ache, and I think this is because when you’re using them it’s an un-natural movement, and that’s on top of what you said yourself about it making it awkward to type so it just didn’t feel worth it.

What I do like tho is using an exercise bike underneath my standing desk - far easier to type and much more enjoyable as you can stop cycling as and when you need to. I’ve got one of these:

I also tried a magnetic one because the one above is not ‘silent’, however I much prefer the one above because you can actually get a great workout with it when you turn the resistance up (so great for Tabata style sessions - though obviously not while under your desk).

I also use a kneeling stool so it’s easy to alternate between them. I haven’t used my bike this year but will get it back out soon.

Another thing I do while on the topic, is periodically grab a mace when I feel like I’ve been at the desk too long, one of these:

I considered one of these but I’m a germaphobe

When using a yoga ball do you ‘sit’ on it or ‘kneel’? If the latter why not give a kneeling stool a try?

It seems quite over-priced - you can get a cheap, slim electric one for one tenth of that! Hence my comment about it being a good business idea for someone if they feel they can make them cheaper (which seems very doable). Maybe even selling them as kits or a blueprint?

I highly recommend a standing desk - I usually feel like you do at the end of the day and at this point I move to the standing position.

I bought this one when it was in the sales and it is very sturdy:

Originally I used it with my old desk’s top, then when I found a wooden top I liked on sale I bought that. I love my desk now - it’s the perfect size and with no toxic materials! :icon_biggrin:

Try a kneeling stool Ben.. you can change positions on them by going from kneeling to sitting and various positions for each too. I’d never go back to a chair now. Here’s the one I’ve got:
