Experienced Software Engineer - Zappi, Cape Town, South Africa, Hybrid

Zappi is a consumer insights platform (~$100M revenue) used by Fortune 500 brands like Diageo and PepsiCo to test ads, products, and brand ideas before spending millions on production. We’re the original disruptor of market research, and AI is our next big lever.

About us

My name: Brendon McLean
My position: CTO
Company name: Zappi
Company website: https://zappi.io
Company headquarters: UK (offices in London, Boston, and Cape Town)
Company info and history: Elixir is our default language for all new backend services. We’ve been migrating from Ruby/Rails toward Elixir over the past few years and run production Elixir services across our platform, with ClickHouse for analytics. We process ~2M survey responses per month.

About the job

Job title: Elixir Software Engineer
Job description: You’d join our Dashboarding & Longitudinal Analytics team, building systems that turn large-scale datasets into actionable signals across the full breadth of customer data, augmented by our growing proprietary data asset. Teams own problems end-to-end — you’ll shape what to build alongside PMs, designers, researchers, and data scientists. Trunk-based development, auto-deploys, Claude Max licenses as standard. Salary range: R700,000–R860,000/year Qualifications or experience required: 3+ years. Strong engineering fundamentals — Elixir curious is fine, you don’t need to know every technology in our stack. We care about effective use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, etc.), comfort with ambiguity, and a bias toward shipping small and often. What the successful job applicant will be working on: Systems processing large-scale survey and consumer insights data. ClickHouse analytics, Elixir services, React frontends. Stack includes Elixir, Ruby/Rails, Python, React, ClickHouse, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes/AWS.

Position on remote work

Remote job: Partially
Remote restrictions: Cape Town, South Africa
Remote leeway: Hybrid — office presence expected but not full-time in-office.
Any other notes about your position on remote work: We have a thoughtfully designed Cape Town office. Hybrid means you’ll be there regularly but it’s not rigid.

I started building something when I read your advocacy post a few weeks ago, before I saw this listing. It’s a survey analytics dashboard that mirrors what your team works on: Elixir, ClickHouse with AggregatingMergeTree materialized views, Broadway for response ingestion, Phoenix LiveView for real-time dashboards. Longitudinal wave-over-wave analysis, demographic breakdowns, significance testing.

I’m based in Nigeria and genuinely open to relocating to Cape Town. Applied through the portal as well.
