Home Assistant is one of the world’s largest open-source projects and was ranked the most active open-source project on GitHub in 2024. More than two million households rely on it to automate their homes while keeping privacy and local control at the center of the experience.

Job description:

You’ll join our Cloud & Infrastructure team to build and operate the services behind Home Assistant Cloud.

Your work will include:

  • Building and maintaining backend services primarily in Elixir.
  • Designing scalable, high-performance cloud applications.
  • Working on authentication, identity, subscription and payment services.
  • Improving service reliability, observability and operational excellence.
  • Participating in code reviews and collaborating across engineering teams.
  • Helping troubleshoot production systems and continuously improving them.

You’ll collaborate with a small, experienced engineering team that values clean design, operational excellence, and the principles of open-source software. If you enjoy solving challenging backend problems while having a direct impact on one of the world’s largest open-source projects, we’d love to hear from you.

Unlike many companies, our roadmap is driven by our users rather than investors. Every improvement you make directly benefits millions of Home Assistant users and helps sustain one of the world’s largest open-source communities.

Salary range (per annum):

  • Canada: CAD 105,000 – 129,100
  • United States: USD 120,000 – 155,000
  • Latin America: USD 50,000 – 65,000
  • Europe: Based on location, experience and local market rates

Qualifications or experience required:

  • 5+ years of professional backend development experience.
  • Production experience with Elixir.
  • Experience with TypeScript.
  • Experience building or maintaining authentication and identity systems.
  • Experience with subscription, billing or payment platforms.
  • Experience operating production systems and debugging live services.
  • Basic system administration knowledge.
  • Experience with Git and GitHub.
  • Fluent English.

We’re flexible within these regions provided candidates can regularly collaborate with the team.

Nabu Casa is a fully remote company. We don’t have fixed working hours, but the Cloud team tries to schedule most meetings between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM Central European Time (CET) to maximize overlap across Europe and the Americas. Candidates should be comfortable occasionally adjusting their schedule to collaborate across time zones.
